Comparing the MCU interface and the RGB interface

In the design of embedded display solutions, the choice of interface type often determines the technical roadmap and cost structure of the entire project. MCU TFT display and RGB TFT display, as the two most widely used interface solutions currently, are respectively suitable for different scenarios and performance requirements.

The core feature of the MCU TFT display lies in the fact that the screen driver IC is equipped with a GRAM. The MCU sends commands and data through the parallel bus, and the driver IC parses the commands and writes the data into the internal memory. Then, it autonomously generates timing signals to drive the screen for display. Throughout this process, no dot clock, line synchronization, or field synchronization signals are required.

The RGB interface transmits the R, G, and B components of each pixel through a parallel data line, and simultaneously outputs the pixel clock (PCLK), horizontal sync (HSYNC), vertical sync (VSYNC), and data enable (DE) signals.

If the application scenario mainly involves static interfaces, parameter display, and menu switching, the MCU interface can fully handle the task. However, if it involves video playback, real-time data visualization, and smooth animation transitions, the advantages of the RGB interface cannot be replaced. The RGB interface can directly support a 60fps refresh rate, ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted display.

The MCU interface has won out with its simple control method and low master control threshold, and is suitable for display applications with small size and medium-low refresh rate.

The RGB interface achieves high bandwidth and low latency display effects through a direct screen-writing architecture, and is the inevitable choice for large-size, high-resolution, and video-related applications.
