The Difference Between Positive Mode and Negative Mode on LCD Display Screen

There are two modes in LCD display, including POSITIVE and Negative Mode.

The main difference between the Positive mode and Negative mode of LCD screens lies in the color relationship between the background (base color) and the displayed content (characters/graphics), which is essentially determined by the installation angle of the polarizer.

Positive Mode: The degree of light transmission is controlled by the rotation of liquid crystal molecules inside the box through an electric field. When the LCD screen is not driven, the backlight can’t pass through the LCD screen, and the screen appears black. After applying voltage to drive the screen, the liquid crystal molecules are controlled by the electric field to rotate, allowing light to pass through and thus displaying pixels. Different magnitudes of voltage will cause the liquid crystal molecules to rotate to varying degrees, thereby showing different brightness levels. For instance, screens with black text on a yellow-green background (yellow-green display screen) and black text on a grayish-white background (FSTN) have better display effects under sunlight.

Negative Mode: In contrast to positive display, without applying voltage to drive the screen, the light source can directly pass through the LCD screen. After an electric field is applied, the liquid crystal molecules rotate, reducing the light transmittance and thus displaying pixels. For instance, a blue background with white characters (blue display) or a black background with white characters (VA segment code display), these types of screens have relatively high contrast ratios and offer better display effects indoors than positive displays.
