What is TN LCD Display and IPS LCD Display?

In the LCD display field, TN LCD (Twisted Nematic LCD) and IPS LCD (In-Plane Switching LCD) are two core technologies that have long dominated the market and supported the operation of thousands of electronic devices. As a professional LCD manufacturer with more than 10 years of experience, JDA has witnessed the upgrading of these two technologies, accumulated rich R&D and production experience, and provided high-quality display solutions for hundreds of customers in industrial control, consumer electronics, automotive electronics and other fields.

Both TN LCD and IPS LCD belong to the category of TFT-LCD (Thin Film Transistor LCD), which realize image display by controlling the deflection of liquid crystal molecules under the action of an electric field to adjust the transmittance of light. However, due to the different arrangement modes of liquid crystal molecules and the design of electrode structures, the two technologies show significant differences in performance, which also determines their different market positioning and application fields.

What is the TN LCD Screen?

TN technology is the most mature process in the field of LCD display. When not powered on, the liquid crystal molecules in a TN panel are twisted 90 degrees in a spiral shape, and their optical rotation property is utilized to control the passage of the backlight. Its manufacturing process is simple, requiring only the creation of an alignment layer on the upper and lower glass substrates, resulting in extremely low production costs.

From a physical perspective, the response time of a TN panel is extremely fast, typically ranging from 3 to 5 ms or even faster. This is because the twisting resistance of the liquid crystal molecules in the vertical direction is relatively low, enabling rapid response to voltage changes. When an electric field is applied, the liquid crystal molecules will rotate along the direction of the electric field, changing from a horizontal spiral state to a vertical state, so that the polarization direction of the light cannot be rotated, and the light is blocked by the second polarizer, forming a dark state. By controlling the voltage of each pixel, the gray scale and color display can be realized.

What is the IPS LCD Screen?

In the IPS panel, the liquid crystal molecules are always parallel to the glass substrate. By applying a transverse electric field, they rotate within the plane. Different from TN LCD, the core of IPS LCD is the ‘in-plane switching’ of liquid crystal molecules: under the condition of no electric field, the liquid crystal molecules are arranged parallel to the glass substrate, and the direction of all liquid crystal molecules is consistent. When an electric field is applied, the liquid crystal molecules rotate in the same plane under the action of the horizontal electric field, without changing their vertical position, so as to adjust the transmittance of light. This unique arrangement mode makes IPS LCD have obvious advantages in viewing angle and color reproduction.

How to choose TN LCD Screen or IPS LCD Screen?

Different application scenarios have different requirements for display performance, which is the core basis for selecting TN LCD and IPS LCD.

Scenarios suitable for TN LCD: High-speed dynamic display scenarios, such as competitive e-sports monitors, industrial camera viewfinders, high-speed detection equipment, and plasma cutting machine HMI. These scenarios require ultra-fast response speed (within 5ms) to avoid afterimages and smearing, and TN LCD’s fast response advantage can be fully exerted. JDA’s TN LCD products with low-temperature adaptive technology can operate stably in the range of -40℃~+85℃, which is more suitable for these scenarios.

Scenarios suitable for IPS LCD: Multi-angle viewing scenarios, such as TV screens, conference displays, car central control displays, tablet computers, and public information displays. These scenarios require that the picture can be clearly seen from any angle, and IPS LCD’s 178° ultra-wide viewing angle can meet this demand.
